If you asked western critics, I feel like most Japanese entertainment would get like... zero points. It's entertainment just for entertainment. Reality shows are people doing just ~something~ because it's entertaining and everyone loves just seeing celebrities doing just whatever. If I think about pretty much any Japanese dramas, the plots as well are kinda... Oh well. There is "good" quality entertainment as well but I'd say the nonsense is the most popular. If we take romantic dramas, they're 80% of time cliches. Because that's what people want to see. What I've seen other dramas, the plots are often way too made up and unbelievable and things just happen without any clear logic.
Now I really need to show a case in point: this one only and the last movie I went to see in Japan.

This is literally the absolute number one worst movie I've ever seen. Or actually I didn't. The plot, drama, everything was just so ridiculously badly made my sister and I had to leave after half an hour. We couldn't stop laughing in the movie theatre and you know, all the Japanese were watching it so seriously that it was really embarrassing and we didn't want to ruin their experience. Or waste one of our rare days off for something like this. But what's funny is that my sister's teacher (we got the tickets from) had said the movie is like ok good. And seems like she wasn't the only Japanese who liked it...
In the movie we saw (if I remember right) that they went to the camp and then some ghosts came and then wow one of them can speak to ghosts with this made up technique that was never explained. And someone had died and then the ghosts and magic and there was literally just no logic at all. And the drama schenes were literally made to look dramatic with these moon & butterfly clips (0.25 in the video). Like.. Try not to laugh in the movie theater when you see many of those.
It was so super ridiculous and later I even got to find out they're gonna transform into some traditional (??) Japanese soldiers with superpowers and oooh well. I really need to watch this movie until the end some day.
But there is some good bad entertainment as well that I really enjoy! A good example is this reality show GENERATIONS 高校TV (高校=koukou=high school) where the idea is just that this super popular group Generations do just whatever. They might go on a trip, visit a school and play games, go eat expensive food, try who gets noticed fastest if they go walk on a street... Anything. I'm not always a big fan of Japanese humor but they have actually a really good sense of humor and even if it's sometimes actually really badly made it's really entertaining.

This is one of the most popular clips of the show I guess. So all you need for really good entertainment is artists waking up each other.
