Ask Japanese

I just recently found this Youtube channel and so far I've enjoyed it a lot. The Japanese are usually very shy and even if you wanted to talk with them you just.. Don't end up talking with them. Most people at my workplace didn't even know about each other's families or basic stuff like that. You really need to get close with someone to be able to talk normally. (Yes the contrast was hilarious when I went to America and the first thing a stranger says is like 'Hey! Where are you from? So where do you work at??') So this channel is pretty special, I think the Japanese are telling about everything very openly compared to usual. You actually get so much info so fast compared to what it would be in real life.

I wonder how the Japanese would react if the person asking the questions was Japanese. The Japanese seem to envy the freedom of western people as there are so many rules for behavior in Japanese culture. With foreigners I guess they don't need to think about the rules and hierarchy and manners so much so that's probably also why there's so much good conversation in the videos.

The topics are basically just some entertaining stuff like what Japanese think about other countries or daily life topics. Some topics are, I think, more interesting if you're familiar with the culture, but there's also content that might interest anyone in western countries:

The reason I also watch these videos is that they're actually really good Japanese practice! The conversations are usually about pretty simple topics so usually I understand about 60-80% and learning new words with the translations is really good practice. I've recently started watching also actual Japanese TV shows lately but there are no subs so yeah that's a bit hard. But good practice. And very very entertaining, I guess I should talk about them as well at some point.

  1. I really enjoy videos like that, even though it's not much of a surprise that the opposite values attract. They really seem very truthful and open about their answers.
