My Mindrtek 2018 top 5

1. Fun learning & Vesterbacka

I'm not sure whether it was the subject or the one speaking but it was the first lecture I really wanted to listen for the whole 30 minutes and could've listened more. I enjoyed hearing the story of Angry Birds and it was also interesting to hear about the China cases and how they've taken into account the
culture differences in the marketing. But I really appreciate that now that he's famous and rich and all, he decides to fly around the world making education systems better. I knew that the Finnish system is especially good (especially after experiencing studying in a Japanese language school when living there) but I never thought it would be so fun compared to other systems and actually have such good effects in the whole country and its people. Wow.

2. Liberland

I'm very very easily fooled and I didn't realize it was 50% a joke until the very end. But it was very interesting I even forgot the picture! I really liked the idea of Liberland but like... Of course it sounds so fun and cool because got to admit that yes that's probably impossible. Reminds me of the about 10 years old me who dreamed about my own tiny country where there would only be my favourite people and the world would be full of cherry blossoms. Liberland is like a very well made joke. But I really enjoyed listening to the lecture!

3. Food!

Yes it's third, I must admit the food (especially this plate from the first day) was super good and coffee and cake and all and I won't forget it for a while. Just to mention they made me this plate in 5 minutes and as I'm a vegetarian and allergic to many spices I normally can't really eat pretty much no normal food. I was so happy about this and how kind the people were. And after a cup of that coffee there Mindtrek got even more enjoyable.

I've got a feeling that research and coffee&cake come often together so maybe I should become a researcher.

4. Elias robot

I went to check the little lecture about the teaching robot Elias, and the moment I heard he can speak languages I wanted to know whether he'd speak Japanese. He didn't though. I went to check him afterwards as you could go meet him at the first floor, but I ended up just talking about practicing languages with the lecturer and a few other people, that was interesting too, though. So I found out that you can't actually chat with Elias, you need an iPad and choose a lecture and then he works. I was really excited about being able to speak Japanese with someone knowing that nobody around would understand me and my mistakes and I could actually test my skills in practice. But not just yet, Elias wasn't quite that clever. Yet. But really cute and good at posing.

5. Algorithms are nice after all!

Due to all the social media algorithms I thought I'd hate them, but this "Why do we need AI to support learning" taught me that algorithms are actually pretty awesome! Like they can tell my personality based on 300 Facebook likes way better than anyone I know, or at least that's what Dr. Topi Litmanen said. And you can actually so much good with them! Like, they can know my emotions based on my tweets and then alter them. Like, yes please! So in the evening when googling for buses and wrote 'tkl' I was like there it is, the kind algorithm knew that my tkl means 'Tampereen kaupungin liikenne' even if it could mean anything.

So all in all Mindtrek was a positive surprise for me! Actually the lectures I thought I'd like didn't really interest me in the end but then the lectures I didn't even possibly think of going ended up being the best.

One example of the bad ones were one of the first lectures on Monday morning, the Virtual fashion thing. I never saw a single piece of fashion and it was more about just like how you can use augmented reality, like Pokemon go. All the things you could just google...

This VR designing thing was like the only interesting thing about the fashion lecture. Not that I'd think it's very useful...

But lots of good surprises so I had great two days there! Thank you Mindtrek!
