Idols, frills, cuteness and... yes, meat!

So. Waasuta ( わーすた/World Standard ) upped today a new MV and it's everything a foreigner would expect from Japanese idol music so I just had to show it. And I have a special reason for it.

(Disclaimer: this is _not music I listen to)

First of all yes cute girls with twintails, weird outfits, animations, Japanese style studio, everything mixed in as weird way as possible. And let's not forget the paws. So a bunch of all weird Japanese stuff you'd expect from a Japanese MV (actually made like that 100% on purpose, this is their style and very extra also from the Japanese point of view). But what made this 110% Japanese and made me show this is the fact the song is actually about eating meat. If you listen to the song, they keep singing "oniku tabetai, kimi to tabetai" and that's basically "I want to eat meat, I want to eat it with you!" (It was released just today so I must rely on just my own Japanese with the translation, but I guess that's well enough for now)

So It's a happy song with cute girls romanticizing eating meat. And to make it fit idols, it's about going on a date, a meat eating date. So they're also singing about stuff like "noo I have nothing to wear!"

It might be surprising for most of you but yes, just about all cute Japanese girls LOVE meat. I mean they really love it, the most usual thing for them to say when you ask their favourite food it's meat. Not cake and ice cream or candy as you can see on their Instagram. Or well, you can see that too - if you look at their instagram stories. Stylish and cute Japanese girl's instagram stories consist of selfies, outfits, hanging out with friends, asks and.... Preferably raw, pretty harsh meat pictures! They really openly just love it.

But anyway, I must say this mv is visually very pleasing, something you'd expect from avex (the label)! Even if you didn't like the music or the style, you must admit the video after all works beautifully as a whole: the color grading, the outfits props, studio, animations, everything! This would sell like 0 copies for Finns with the content being cute idols and pink weirdness, but that was the point anyway!

You can stop reading here but just to mention.... Or actually don't stop reading but I don't force you to listen to more idols if you don't want to...

An idol group I DO follow and love and cherish and everything and I've been on their lives in Japan, CY8ER...

Did you notice already?? I just now noticed it too! It's shot in the same studio!

But just to mention even if I really wasn't planning on explaining about CY8ER but these two MV:s were made totally differently even if they might seem really similar for you. The big difference is that the Waasuta mv was made by avex, a huge music company in Japan, but CY8ER is a self produce group which is very very rare in idol industry. Usually everything is made for idols and they just wear what they're told and do what they're told. But you see, this blond haired girl with panda twintails, Rinahamu, is the boss of the company! So she's basically the producer of the group. Amazing, right?? In the hierarchical idol world this time the idol is the boss! This is actually one big reason why I really like the group, being an idol can be really though with endless working hours but I can be sure my idols are doing things for their own free will. And I can be sure the efforts they make and the money they make will go for a good cause. Doing things for your own will is totally not a thing in Japan the same way it is in Finland so CY8ER really is rare.

  1. The waasuta video was so stereotypically japanese it hurt :'D
Also, I had no idea that meat was such an important thing? When you think japanese food you instantly picture sushi and sashimi. Not meat.

    Very interesting insight :)

  2. Wow, I had no idea either that meat is a "thing" like that in Japan. I don't know anything about music business in general, but that info about idols producing their own music being that rare is also pretty interesting.
