Gotta catch 'em all! Or just the starter pokemon.

I haven't played any sort of video games for a long long time. There have come times when a new Pokemon game for 3DS is published and I'd like to play, but as I stopped buying the handheld consoles after DS lite that's impossible. I'm not interested in any other video games than Pokemon so 200 euros for one game feels a bit too expensive. When I was little I played handheld console games a lot, mostly Pokemon. I loved spending hundreds of hours playing them but then something happened. I just can't find myself concentrating on video games anymore. And what I'd like to play is Pokemon but the new games just aren't what I want from my Pokemon video game. I really wish I could still get to that mindset where all you want to do is play your Pokemon game...

The first Pokemon game I ever played was Pokemon Red, the oldest one. I used literally all my money at that time, 40 euros, to buy a used Game Boy Color and Pokemon Red from huuto.net. I also wanted it because there's one of the most famous game glitches called MissingNo. I obviously couldn't read any of the texts but Pokemon games have always been the same so it doesn't matter: you get the pokemons, train them and you become the best trainer of all time. And even when I started to understand English and even now I still just press the A to skip all the texts.

As a narrative game I don't know what pokemon is as that and Zelda are the only roleplay games I've played. But as I like it when things keep simple, pokemon suits me well as the story is always the same (except on the newest ones that I don't even want to try!): when you start the game you'll already know what to expect. You start from waking up at home, get the starter pokemon, start catching some more pokemon, get a party of pokemon you like and train them. You venture in pokemon world winning other trainers and at the end of the game you win the pokemon league. You always venture through the whole pokemon world but the worlds and little storylines are always a bit different.

As a player I was always one of those who tried to avoid any extra tasks such as matches with other trainers or catching pokemon you don't need. The phrase 'gotta catch 'em all' doesn't really fit me as I always caught just the amount of pokemon I needed. At Red I actually had pretty much just my beloved wartortle that I in the end trained to 100 levels (the maximum), but I never let it transform to it's bigger form blastoise because it wasn't cute. A lot stronger though but first things first!

And now I started to wish I could play Pokemon so bad!

  1. I feel you. I would also like to play the new Pokémon games, but don't want to spend a lot of money on various handheld consoles. And I also like keeping the pokémons that are cute.
Nice different perspective on the games. I feel like there are so many different ways to play the Pokémon games, maybe that's why so many enjoy them.
